Installation Documentation for Stata

This is information is for faculty, staff, and students in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University who wish to use the statistical software package Stata.

Stata will run on the platforms listed below.

  • Stata for Windows
    • Windows 10 *
    • Windows 8 *
    • Windows 7 *
    • Windows Vista *
    • Windows Server 2012, 2008, 2003 *
    * 64-bit and 32-bit Windows varieties for x86-64 and x86 processors made by Intel® and AMD Find out if your OS is 64-bit compliant.
  • Stata for Mac
    • Stata for Mac requires 64-bit Intel® processors (Core™2 Duo or better) running OS X 10.7 or newer.  Find out if your OS is 64-bit compliant.

Hardware requirements

  • Minimum of 512 MB of RAM
  • Minimum of 900 MB of disk space

Install - Mac OSX

  • If you are upgrading from an older version of Stata, drag the current Stata folder to the trash and empty the trash.  Please have your license and authorization key ready (see below).
    1. Locate the Stata15.dmg file in your Downloads folder and click to open.  Open the installation media from your Desktop or Downloads folder.  Double-click on the Install Stata file (icon) to begin.
    2. Read the Introduction, click Continue.
    3. Read/browse the License, click Continue to accept the terms of the license agreement.
    4. Select Stata/SE as the installation type and click Continue.
    5. Click Install, the process should take about 2 minutes.
    6. Summary screen should indicate that the installation was successful, click Close.
    7. Once installed, remove the Stata disc image on your desktop by right-mouse clicking the image and selecting Eject "Stata."  To open the program use Launchpad.  To directly access the program, drag the STATA 15 icon from Launchpad to the menu.

Install - Windows

  • If you are upgrading from an older version of Stata, go to the Windows Control panel and Uninstall the earlier version of Stata.  Please have your license and authorization key ready (see below).
    1. Locate the downloaded SetupStata14.exe on your computer, and double-click on file to start the installation.  A menu window should appear welcoming you to the STATA 15 installation wizard.  Click Next to begin.
    2. Read or browse the License agreement, select the option "I accept the license agreement;" click Next.
    3. In the text boxes, type your full name and TAMU for Organization.  Leave the default setting "Anyone who uses this computer" selected.   Click Next.
    4. Choose the flavor of Stata (Stata/SE) that matches your license, and then click Next.
    5. Leave default installation destination folder.  Click Next.
    6. Leave default setting "Use Each User's Documents Folder."  Click Next.
    7. If there are no changes to the previous menus, your are ready to install the program, click Next.
    8. Installation progress monitor, takes about 2 minutes to complete.
    9. When installation is finished you will see that STATA 15 has been successfully installed, click Finish.


License and Activation Key Stata Software

The first time you open STATA 15 you will be asked to license and activate your license.  The License and Activation Key is an important document.  Three pieces of information are necessary — the serial number, code, and authorization.  This information is required during the installation process of the software licensed from StataCorp LP (“StataCorp”).

Note:  When you type your code and authorization into the computer, you may type in lowercase or uppercase letters; it does not matter.  You may also omit or add spaces as you wish.

By installing the software and entering the Activation Key set forth in this document into your computer and unlocking the software, you confirm that you agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of StataCorp’s then-current Software End-User License Agreement (as amended from time to time) (“Software License”).  If you do not agree to be bound by all the terms and conditions of the Software License, do not enter the codes in this document or otherwise install or use the software.
