Mapping Home Drive and Shared Folders

Applicability

These instructions have been written for members of the CEHD @ Texas A&M community and the information provided is specifically for use with CEHD systems.

If Off-campus you must first connect to VPN

  • You may already have VPN installed.  Search for VPN or Cisco to check.  If not, you may need to contact Technology Services to install it for you.
  • Information about VPN can be found within Texas A&M's Knowledge Base or by calling A&M's Help Desk Central at 979-845-8300.
  • Once connected through VPN follow the instructions below.

Introduction:

If you do not have, but need, shared drive space on the network for your research group please utilize the Shared Network Folders service and include a list of people who need access to the folder.

CEHD shares are usually of the form

ED-FILE:

Home Drives: (DEPT = EAHR, EPSY, HLKN, TLAC, or DEAN)

  • (Windows)  \\ed-file.ed.tamu.edu\home\DEPT\yournetid
  • (Mac)    smb://ed-file.ed.tamu.edu/home/DEPT/yournetid

Department Shares:

  • (Windows)  \\ed-file.ed.tamu.edu\shares\DEPT
  • (Mac)    smb://ed-file.ed.tamu.edu/shares/DEPT

 

Instructions for Windows:

Windows 10:

To map a shared folder on Windows 10,

  1. If this is a new folder or you were recently added, logout of Windows and back in. (This is necessary for new permissions to take affect.)
  2. Open File Explorer (see below)


  3. Click "This PC"

     
  4. Click the "Computer" Tab, then "Map Network Drive"

     
  5. For Home drive, choose drive letter "H" and enter the following information:  \\ed-file.ed.tamu.edu\home\*dept*\yournetid
  6. If you using a personal computer for which you do login with the NetID, you will need to choose "Connect Using Different Credentials."  You may choose reconnect at logon but you are not required to.
  7. When prompted, enter:  yournetid@tamu.edu  as well as your NETID password.

     
  8. Click "OK", and then "Finish".
  9. For Share drive, choose drive letter "X" and enter the following information:  \\ed-file.ed.tamu.edu\shares
  10. Note, that you must choose "Connect Using Different Credentials."  You may choose reconnect at logon but you are not required to.

     
  11. When prompted, enter:  yournetid@tamu.edu  as well as your NETID password.
  12. Click "OK", and then "Finish".

Notes

  • If you have permissions to read the selected folder it will open for you.  If you do not, you will an error message "Windows cannot access \\SERVER\YOURSHARE"
  • If you still can't login, contact Technology Services with your username
  • http://it.education.tamu.edu/services/it-help-request-forms/submit-help-request​ (Request type is Shared Network Folder)
  • Once you are able to access the folder, you can right click on the shortcut or a subfolder and select ("Create Shortcut") [OR you can drag-and-drop with the right-button] and put the shortcut on your desktop or other location.

Instructions for Mac OS :

To add a shortcut to shared folder on Macs,

  • On Macs, shared folder addresses look like smb://SERVER/sharename/folder
    • For example, the Mac equivalent of the Windows address \\ed-file.ed.tamu.edu\Shares\DEPT\ would be smb://ed-file.ed.tamu.edu/Shares/DEPT/
  1. To map a department shared folder in MacOS, go to Finder (Menu)

     
  2. Click GO in the menu bar and choose --> Connect to Server.

     
  3.  In the server address field type:  smb://ed-file.ed.tamu.edu/shares and click Connect.

     
  4. Enter your netid@tamu.edu and NETID Password when prompted then click Connect:

     
  5. To map your home drive folder in MacOS, go to Finder (Menu)

     
  6. Click GO in the menu bar and choose --> Connect to Server.

     
  7.  In the server address field type:  smb://ed-file.ed.tamu.edu/home/*dept*/yournetid and click Connect.

     
  8. Enter your netid@tamu.edu and NETID Password when prompted then click Connect:

Connecting from Off-campus:

The college provides network storage for individual faculty and staff and for groups associated with the college. These shares can be used for university related purposes (and incidental personal use). When requesting a change to permissions, be sure to include the NetID of anyone to add/remove.
